Here is a question I would like to just put out there: can girls and guys truly simply be friends? I've been thinking about it for a while, and as I have guy friends, I feel it is always more complicated with them... so Feigy, what are your thoughts???
Friendships with the opposite straight sex are definitely more complicated than friendships with the same straight sex. I always firmly beleived that it's impossible for straight guys and straight girls to simply be friends with each other. I thought that if there is such a friendship than the guy or/and the girl must be secretly attracted to the other person. I basically thought that unless one of the two people, or both of them is/are homosexual(s), an opposite-sex friendship is not possible. While I pretty much still beleive this to be true, I also realize that if the guy or the girl in such a relationship, who is interested in the other person, is able to respect the fact that the other person is not interested in them, a great friendship could develop (I think I can speak from experience here). Yet, it's very hard to repress your feelings for another person and just settle for a friendship, when you want more. You might say "But I have a straight guy friend and I'm straight". This is possible BUT I'd imagine that your friendship with this guy is not as close as it's with your girlfriends (not just different). I do have to admit that with age I was able to build pretty close friendships with guys, who are straight, as far as I'm concerned. Thing is, it took me a long time to get to that point and I am not as open and as close with my guyfriends as I am with my girlfriends. For example, I don't share things as often and in as much detail as I do with my girlfriends. For these reasons, I think that it's very rare that a friendship between a straight guy and a straight girl can develop and stay a friendship.
